Description
Arosa lies at the head of the Schanfigg valley in Graubünden, at seventeen hundred and seventy-five metres, reached by a narrow-gauge railway that climbs from Chur through more than fifty bridges and tunnels. The village spreads along a wooded basin holding two small lakes, the Untersee and the Obersee, which serve for swimming and boating in summer and are frozen over in winter. A two-stage cable car rises to the Weisshorn at two thousand six hundred and fifty-three metres, and the ski area has been linked to neighbouring Lenzerheide since 2013 to form one of the largest domains in eastern Switzerland. Beside the middle station of that cable car, at two thousand metres, the Arosa bear sanctuary gives a home to bears rescued from captivity elsewhere in Europe. A wooden mountain chapel from the fifteenth century survives above the village.
