Short description of West Island
West Island is the arrival point of the Cocos Keeling Islands, a horseshoe atoll of palm islands around a turquoise lagoon, far out in the Indian Ocean and flown from Perth twice a week. It holds the airstrip, most of the rooms and the small community of Australian residents. The steady trade winds from April to November draw kitesurfers from around the world to the lagoon, and the sand bar of The Spit at the southern tip can be waded at low tide. Kayaks, bicycles and a ferry to the other islands make up the way of getting around.
