Waipoua Forest (Te Wao Nui o Tāne) is the largest remaining tract of ancient native kauri forest in New Zealand and one of the country's most important natural sanctuaries. It is renowned for Tāne Mahuta, the largest known kauri tree, and Te Matua Ngahere, the kauri with the greatest trunk circumference. Well-maintained boardwalks lead visitors through towering forest giants, lush rainforest, and an atmosphere of remarkable tranquility. The forest is not only an important refuge for rare native plants and wildlife, but also holds profound cultural and spiritual significance for the Māori, especially the Te Roroa iwi. Waipoua Forest combines spectacular natural beauty, ancient history, and living Indigenous traditions, making it one of the North Island's most extraordinary destinations.
