Description
Uralsk was a Cossack town on the far edge of the Russian empire and kept more of its nineteenth century merchant streets than anywhere else in Kazakhstan, so Kurmangazy street still runs as a line of brick and stucco facades. Pushkin came here to research the Pugachev rebellion and the house he worked in is a museum. The cathedral of the Archangel Michael dates from the seventeen fifties and is the oldest building in the country still in use. The Ural river below the town is again taken as the divide between Europe and Asia, so the far bank is another continent.
