Description
Romblon is a small island town in the province of the same name, wedged between Luzon and the Visayas and reached by ferry from Batangas or by flying to nearby Tablas Island. Known as the Marble Capital of the Philippines, its quarries and roadside workshops turn out carved figures and tiles sold across the country. Twin Spanish-era forts, San Andres and Santiago, still guard the harbor where they were built to fend off raiders in the seventeenth century. A short outrigger ride reaches Cobrador and Lugbung islands and the sandbar at Bonbon Beach, while the town itself keeps a slow, cash-only pace uncommon this close to Manila.
