Description
Oskemen is still widely called “Ust-Kamenogorsk” and sits where the Ulba joins the Irtysh, a metals town that is the way into the Kazakh Altai. Its own draw is a large open-air ethnographic museum where houses of the peoples who were settled or deported here have been brought together in one park, Kazakh, Russian, German, Tatar and Old Believer. Beyond it the reservoirs, the Sibiny lakes and the Ivanovsky ridge fill a few days. The Irtysh embankment is where the town spends its evenings. Everything further into the Altai starts from here, and the road season for that is short.
