Description
Oranjestad is the only town on Sint Eustatius and splits into two levels. Upper Town sits on the cliff around Fort Oranje, whose cannon fired the first foreign salute to an American flag in 1776. Lower Town runs along the bay below, where the foundations and arches of hundreds of eighteenth century warehouses lie half in the sea. The island was then one of the busiest free ports in the Atlantic and was known as the “Golden Rock”. The ruined synagogue of Honen Dalim and the roofless Dutch Reformed church stand in the upper streets. Divers surface here holding blue glass trade beads.
