Short description of Nukunonu

Nukunonu is the largest atoll of Tokelau by lagoon and the middle stop on the boat run, a ring of low islets with the village split across two of them and joined by a causeway. Its church of Saint Joseph is the grandest building in the group, built from coral lime. The lagoon inside the ring is wide, shallow and pale, and fishing from it feeds the village. Nukunonu is the one atoll where the Catholic mission took hold completely, while the other two are shared with the Protestant church. Visitors stay in the village guest house or with families.
