Description
Moukalaba-Doudou lies in the far south-west of Gabon, seven hundred kilometres from Libreville, and holds one of the densest populations of western lowland gorillas anywhere. Researchers began habituating a group at Doussala in 2003 and local trackers have followed it ever since. The land is a mosaic rather than solid forest, with the grassy Nyanga plains running east, rainforest in the middle and the Doudou Mountains along the western edge. Elephants, buffalo and hippos use the open ground, and more than seventy amphibian species live here, the richest count in West and Central Africa. Tchibanga is the road gateway.
