Description
Lugo is the oldest city in Galicia and the only place in the world still completely encircled by its original Roman wall. Built in the third century, the rampart runs a little over two kilometres, carries eighty-five towers and ten gates, and can be walked right round on top, a slow circuit above the rooftops and the cathedral. Santa Maria cathedral began in Romanesque and gathered Gothic and Baroque layers over the centuries. Roman baths and a bridge survive down by the Mino. The Camino Primitivo passes straight through, and in the tapas streets a drink still comes with food.
