Svalbard and Jan Mayen · Spitsbergen

Short description of Liefdefjorden

Liefdefjorden is a fjord on the north coast of Spitsbergen that ends at Monacobreen, a glacier front several kilometres wide named after the Prince of Monaco who explored here. Ships cruise slowly along the ice while kittiwakes feed in the meltwater at the glacier front, and the fjord is one of the more likely places on Svalbard to see polar bears hunting on the ice floes or walking along the shore. The red sandstone hills of the region give the landscape an unusual colour. Landings by inflatable boat are made at a few points, and a trapper's hut stands on one of the small islands at the mouth of the fjord.
