Description
Kyzylorda sits on the Syr Darya in the middle of the rice belt and was briefly the capital of Soviet Kazakhstan, which explains a grander centre than a town this size would otherwise have. The Aitbay mosque and the riverside embankment are what there is to see, and the regional museum carries the story of the river and what was done to it. The real use of the place is as the base for two things that are hard to reach otherwise, the closed cosmodrome city of Baikonur down the line and the drying Aral to the north west, and both are a long way out.
