Description
Kaikōura is located on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island and is one of the country's most important nature destinations. The coastal town is renowned for its exceptionally rich marine life, supported by the nearby Kaikōura Canyon, where deep, nutrient rich waters attract an abundance of sea creatures. Sperm whales can be seen year round, alongside dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and, depending on the season, other whale species. Surrounded by the Kaikōura Ranges and the Pacific Ocean, the region offers spectacular scenery and excellent opportunities for coastal walks, kayaking and wildlife watching. Fresh seafood, especially crayfish, is a local specialty. Kaikōura is widely regarded as one of New Zealand's finest destinations for experiencing the unique combination of dramatic mountain landscapes and abundant marine wildlife.
