Description
Jerez de la Frontera is the sherry capital of Andalusia and the town that gave the fortified wine its name. Centuries-old bodegas line its streets, their high cathedral-like cellars stacked with butts of fino, amontillado and oloroso, and most open their doors for tours and tastings. The city is equally famous for horses. At the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, Carthusian stallions perform a choreographed ballet to Spanish music. Jerez also claims to be a cradle of flamenco, and the Barrio de Santiago still produces singers and dancers of national standing. A Moorish Alcazar and a many-layered cathedral anchor the old centre.
