Description
Formentera is the smallest inhabited Balearic island and is reached only by ferry from Ibiza, which keeps its character quite separate from its neighbour. A narrow sand spit runs north towards Ibiza and carries Ses Illetes, a beach of white sand and shallow turquoise water regularly named among the finest in Europe. Meadows of protected Posidonia seagrass filter the water offshore and are the reason it stays so clear. The land is low and almost treeless, crossed by marked cycling tracks, and rises only at the eastern plateau of La Mola, where a lighthouse stands above the cliffs.
