Description
Dogon country runs along the Bandiagara escarpment, a sandstone cliff a hundred and fifty kilometres long with villages built into its face, at its foot and on the plateau above. Granaries with conical thatch caps, togu na shelters with carved posts and low roofs that force men to stay seated, and the abandoned cliff dwellings of the earlier Tellem people are all in one view. The Dogon kept a cosmology of remarkable complexity and a mask tradition performed at funerals. Walking between villages over several days is the way the region is seen, and it is UNESCO listed.
