Description
Chartres is a historic city in the Beauce region southwest of Paris and one of France’s great centers of Gothic architecture. The city is world-famous for Chartres Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose medieval stained-glass windows are renowned for their brilliant colors and distinctive “Chartres Blue”. The historic old town, with its half-timbered houses, winding lanes, small bridges, and riverside paths along the Eure, retains much of its medieval character. Chartres combines outstanding sacred art and centuries-old pilgrimage traditions with the tranquil atmosphere of a French provincial town, making it one of the most remarkable historic destinations within easy reach of Paris.
