Short description of Centre Hills
The Centre Hills are the forested spine of Montserrat, a ridge of steep ghauts and cloud forest that escaped the eruptions and now shelters most of the island's wildlife. The Oriole Walkway loops through the trees above Salem, and on it a patient walker may see the Montserrat oriole, the black and yellow national bird found nowhere else. The mountain chicken, a giant frog on the edge of extinction, survives in the damp valleys. Other trails climb to Katy Hill or follow Blackwood Allen along the ridge. At Runaway Ghaut, a spring by the road is said to make any visitor who drinks from it return.
