Burgos is the historic capital of the Spanish province of Burgos and one of the most important cultural cities of Castile. The city is best known for its magnificent Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses the tomb of the national hero El Cid, its well-preserved medieval old town along the Arlanzón River, and its role as a major stop on the Camino de Santiago. Burgos combines centuries of history with modern culture, including the Museum of Human Evolution, which showcases the world-famous archaeological discoveries from the nearby Sierra de Atapuerca. The city is regarded as one of northern Spain's finest historic destinations and a gateway to the landscapes of Castile.
