Description
Burabay is where the northern steppe breaks into granite hills and pine forest around a group of clear lakes, and it is the busiest holiday place in Kazakhstan, with about a million and a half visitors a year. The classic view is from the Bolektau hill over Lake Burabay with the rock called Zhumbaktas standing in the water. This is a domestic resort rather than a wilderness, so the shores carry sanatoria, boat hire, bathhouses and a good deal of loud music. It works in winter as well as summer, which very few places this far north manage.
