Description
Aktobe grew from a Russian fort on the Ilek into the industrial capital of western Kazakhstan, and what a visitor finds is a broad Soviet centre with a very large new mosque at the end of it. Nur Gasyr holds several thousand and is the one thing here that people photograph. The rest of the town is parks, an esplanade and a regional museum, all pleasant and none of it a reason to travel. The point of Aktobe is that it is the junction where the road and rail west split, and the Mugalzhar hills south of it are the last of the Urals.
