Description
The Wakhan is the finger of Afghanistan that runs three hundred kilometres east between Tajikistan and Pakistan to touch China, drawn on a map in 1895 so that two empires would not share a border. Wakhi farmers live in stone villages along the Panj as far as Sarhad-e Broghil, where the road ends and everything beyond goes by yak. On the Little Pamir above it Kyrgyz herders keep yurts through summers at four thousand metres. The Afghan Pamir was made a national park in 2014. The season is July to September. Fewer than a hundred and fifty foreigners reach the Little Pamir in a good year.
